That is awesome news indeed. I've been meaning to for years (y'know, family commitments, tyranny of distance and all that) but this year I shall make a real effort to visit the gallery.

I saw that painting. Being decidedly out-of-touch with all this stuff, I'm trying to find out when the exhibition is being held, and Google is refusing to be helpful (it only has details on 2007). Do you by any chance have details?

The Archibald exhibition is 8 March - 18 May, and I think the announcement of the winner is on Friday 7 March about noon.

Since we will be going to the Botanic Gardens for a picnic and the Gallery is next to the gardens, I can't see why not. IF we head off early and go to the gallery on the way, we don't have to run off and leave the picnic to catch the exhibition. If you see what I mean.

Bloody brillant. I hope he wins it. Either Nick or Robert Hannaford (if he's showing this year).

(remember his portrait of Shaun Tan will be hung in the State Gallery from the 11th of March for the Moran prize - hope he can make it a double-header!)

Everyone should go along and vote for Nick in the People's Choice Award. That why he might win something.

Seriously the trustees of the NSW Art Gallery have their heads up their tails sometimes. The best thing last year was Robert Hannaford's "Tubes", and they gave it to a nice picture of Janet Laurence. "Tubes" is the bravest self-potrait I have ever seen, and is comparable to Rembrantdt's self-portraits in old age.

David Stratton
Hi Gang, Nick here. Thanks for all the groovy comments and support. As you know, the Archibald Prize is notoriously difficult to get hung in. The fact that I've made both the Doug Moran and the Archies at the same time is fucking unbelievable. The call was expected Wednesday but much to my surprise it came today...which means I don't have to go through days of nail biting agony waiting for the phone to ring. It's all worked out very nicely...especially after Chris Lilly dropped out at the last minute. I only had a couple of weeks to get David's massive portrait done. He was actually very excited with my news since he had said there was a curse as he's been attempted 3 times in the past, but none got in. I rang him and said "the curse is broken!" Updates as they happen!
